As the ancients observed, the mind has a tendency to race. But what can be done about it? If you’re in this state and you don’t feel like you can control your thoughts, what are your options? Well, you’re about to find out. In this post, we look at some of the strategies you can use to calm down and retake control of your centre. Here’s some things you might like to try: |

Put It On Paper
If it seems like too much to contain in your mind, try to get it out on paper. Brain-dumping into a document or journal can be an excellent way to externalise the angst and retake control of your mind.
What’s nice about this method is that it sometimes feels like it’s no longer inside but now also “out there.” In essence, you’re offloading the thoughts so they can physically live somewhere else.
Take A Breathing Break
Another thing you might want to try is to take a deep breathing break. A few breaths is usually all you need to reclaim peace of mind and get back to normal.
Breathing works because it activates the calming parts of the nervous system. You’re much more likely to feel relaxed after a few deep inhalations, and usually it only takes a couple of minutes.
Read About Taking Control
Another thing you can do is to research how to take control in a way that works for you. These days, there are all sorts of resources that can point you in the right direction, based on your personality type and what matters most to you.
For example, Take Control of Your Mental Health with Dr. Harris Jensen explains some of the things that you can do to feel your centre again. There are all sorts of tools, like alternative treatments that literally reprogram the mind.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation
You can also try things like progressive muscle relaxation. Relaxing one muscle at a time can be an excellent way to feel a deep sense of peace throughout the body, similar to deep breathing.
Many people find it helpful to use guided meditation for this. A spiritual guide runs through various muscles in the body, asking you to relax them one at a time until you feel completely at ease.
Cold Exposure
If you want to throw yourself in at the deep end, you could also try cold exposure. Dipping into ice water is a proven way to reset your body’s nervous system and force it into a more relaxed state.
Again, it sounds strange. Initially, there’s a lot of shock. But after a couple of minutes in a cold shower or ice plunge, your mental state is completely different.
Use Binaural Beats
Finally, you could try using binaural beats. These are particularly helpful if you’re at work because they put your brain into a different kind of state. Suddenly, a lot of your fears and anxieties melt away, and you’re simply able to focus on the task at hand.
