Headaches from stress are your body's way of telling you to "cool it."
If we lived in a cartoon world, headaches from stress would be the equivalent of smoke coming out of your ears. Your mind is overloaded, plain and simple. It's a clear sign that you need to take a time out and focus on relaxation. Like dealing with anxiety, simply taking a pill to "cure" the headache is not the answer.
Headaches from stress present a great opportunity to ask yourself "what is going on in my life?" They shouldn't be dismissed as mere headaches," but rather as indicators.
Remember, there may be an outside cause to your headache. For the record, if you feel you need to be checked by a medical doctor, do so. The answer may also be as simple as getting an eye exam!
As with my battle with anxiety attacks, my headaches from stress have been self-induced. I can honestly say that I have been the cause of my stress headaches! I can remember working myself up into such a state that my head felt like it was in a vice grip. I literally became one of those squishy stress heads - but I was the one doing the squeezing!!!
Instead of a stress head, I was a "Stress-Ted." My headaches from stress underscore the importance of controlling my thoughts and the messages I send myself.
If you are experiencing headaches from stress, the best approach is to go on offense. Do not let it consume you - put a plan into action.
For example, if you are worried about losing your job (a cause of stress headaches), write down your plans to reduce the stress of losing your job -
I WILL:
1. Update my resume
2. Begin sending my resume to potential employers
3. Share my worries with my spouse, partner, family
4. Think BIG: is this an opportunity to pursue another career or passion? WOW!!
I particularly like #4 because it's a great way to turn a stressful thought into an exciting possibility. You are literally empowering yourself by turning the stressful thought into a positive tool, now THAT'S power!
Headaches from stress are a great way for you to assess your life on all levels: personal, marital/relationship, professional, social, etc. I prefer to look at them as a portal to improving my life. Pay attention and always be honest with yourself. I challenge you to try this!
Deep relaxation can lower blood pressure and relieve headaches quickly!
Tension headaches are horrible. And if the pain wasn't enough, they make it difficult to concentrate, often sabotaging you when you need your focus the most.
All the advice about relaxing your shoulders and neck is all very well, but it can be extremely difficult to remember when you have a busy life.
